#5 Southern Indiana (13-1): 117
Harris-Stowe State University (4-13): 78
EVANSVILLE, Ind.– The 5th-ranked University of Southern Indiana men's basketball team closed out the 2006 calendar year with a 117-78 victory over Harris-Stowe State University Saturday evening at the Physical Activities Center. USI raises its record to 13-1 overall as it nears the half-way point of the season, while Harris-Stowe State drops to 4-13.
The victory was highlighted by seniorÂ
Geoff Van Winkle (Ferdinand, Indiana) becoming the USI career-record holder for three-point field goals made. Van Winkle's three long-range baskets Saturday night gave him a total of 239 career three-point field goals, passing Cris Brunson's (2001-05) 237.
The Eagles never trailed in the game and led by as many as 42 points in the second half.
Including Van Winkle's 11 points, USI had six players score in double-figures. Senior guardÂ
Melvin Hall (Evansville, Indiana) led the way with 19 points and continued his torrid pace from beyond the three-point arc with five three-point field goals.
Hall, who set the USI single-season record a year ago with 82 three-point field goals, has 58 long-range baskets this year and is 15 three-pointers ahead of last season's pace.
USI's senior forwardÂ
Marty Wise followed Hall in the scoring column with 18 points and had a game-high 13 rebounds. The double-double was Wise's fourth of the season.
Eagles' freshman centerÂ
Brandon Hopf (Ferdinand, Indiana) fell one point shy of tying a season-high with 14 points, while senior centerÂ
Rashard Sullivan (Miami, Florida) and sophomore forwardÂ
Mike Kalicak (St. Charles, Missouri) rounded out the double-figure scorers with 13 points and 12 points, respectively.
The 117 points marked the fifth time this season that USI has passed the century mark.
USI resumes GLVC action in 2007 when it hosts Rockhurst University January 4 and Drury University January 6. The USI-Rockhurst game is scheduled for a 7:30 p.m. start, while the USI-Drury contest is scheduled for a 3:15 p.m. tip-off.
