USI volleyball regains momentum to win 3-1

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The University of Southern Indiana volleyball team used a fast start in game four to regain momentum and win 3-1 over Bellarmine University Friday night in Louisville, Kentucky. USI raises its record to 13-6 overall and 5-3 in the GLVC, while Bellarmine goes to 8-8, 4-5 GLVC.

The Screaming Eagles won the opening game of the match, 30-17, but had to come-from-behind to win the second. The Eagles outscored the Knights 16-9 to win the second game 30-27 and take a 2-0 lead.

The Knights controlled the third game from start to finish and got onto the scoreboard with a 30-25 win.

After Bellarmine scored the first point of the fourth game, USI reeled off 11 straight points to regain the momentum. The Eagles would lead by as many as 14 points twice before settling for the 30-16 game four win and the 3-1 final.

USI was led by senior outside hitter Chelse Doubler (Griffin, Indiana), who had 17 kills and six solo blocks. Doubler needs just 30 kills to become the ninth player in USI history to reach 1,000 career kills.

Doubler was joined in double figure kills by senior outside hitter Emily Ryan (Batesville, Indiana) and freshman outside hitter Courtney Bealor (LaPorte, Indiana) with 12 kills each. Freshman setter Kathi Hindman (Carmel, Indiana) dished out 44 assists to the USI hitters.

The Eagles continue their six-match road-swing at 1 p.m. (CDT) Saturday when they play at Northern Kentucky University. USI is 3-1 on the six-match road trip, which concludes Tuesday at Kentucky Wesleyan College.
