Collins ices win for Eagles

EVANSVILLE, Ind.—Freshman point guard Keisha Collins (South Holland, Illinois) scored 11 of her game-high 25 points in the final two minutes to lead the University of Southern Indiana women's basketball team to a crucial 90-83 victory over Saint Joseph's College Saturday afternoon at the Physical Activities Center.

Collins, who was 11-of-12 from the free throw line while dishing out a game-high five assists, knocked down nine free throws in the final two minutes to help the Screaming Eagles stave off a late Saint Joseph's rally.

USI (13-10, 5-7 GLVC), on the strength of a pair of three-pointers by junior guard Katie Thiesenhusen (Muskego, Wisconsin), started the game with a 13-2 run that lasted nearly four minutes.

The Pumas (11-8, 4-7 GLVC), however, used three of its four first-half three pointers during a 28-17 run that knotted the contest at 30.

USI, however, used a pair of layups—one by Collins and another by sophomore forward Jasmine Baines (Jeffersonville, Indiana)—to cap off an 8-3 run and head into the locker room with a 40-35 halftime advantage.

Once again, Saint Joseph's battled back, this time using a 12-2 run to open the half and take its first lead of the contest (47-42). Thiesenhusen, however, answered the Pumas' call, knocking down two more of her game-high six three-pointers, to pull the Eagles into a 50-50 tie. Thiesenhusen, who was 6-of-8 from behind the arc, finished the game with 22 points and five rebounds.

Trailing by one with less than 13 minutes to play, the Eagles reeled off 11 straight points to take its largest lead of the second half (63-53). Junior forward/center Sarah Buldtman (Metropolis, Illinois), who finished with eight points and a career-high nine rebounds, started the run, which gave the Eagles the lead for good, with a pair of free throws and a layup.

The Eagles also got 16 points and six rebounds out of Baines as well as five steals from senior forward Ashley Green (Otterbein, Indiana).

Saint Joseph's got 20 points and a game-high 13 rebounds from junior forward Michelle Bova, while sophomore guard Allison Hughes chipped in 13 points. Junior guard Megan Haag finished with 12 points, while senior guard Ashley Hughes added 11 points and four assists.

USI returns to action February 4 when it travels to Owensboro, Kentucky, and the Sportscenter to take on GLVC rival Kentucky Wesleyan College at 5:15 p.m.
