USI baseball falls in series finale

CARROLLTON, Ga.– The University of Southern Indiana baseball team dropped the series finale at the State University of West Georgia, 2-1, Sunday afternoon in Carrollton, Georgia. USI goes to 3-2 in 2005, while West Georgia is 14-6.

The Braves scored the winning run on a RBI double by third baseman Jim Beaumal in the bottom of the eighth. USI's junior infielder Brent Perry (Versailles, Indiana) was stranded in the ninth when senior designated hitter Andy Rock (West Chester, Ohio) popped out to end the game.

USI took an early 1-0 lead with a run in the top of the third. Eagles' sophomore catcher Jed Davis (Grayville, Illinois) scored USI's lone run when senior centerfielder Noah Wetzel (New Salisbury, Indiana) reached on the Braves' first baseman Alex Parker.

West Georgia tied the game, 1-1, in the bottom of the seventh on a RBI double by centerfielder LaVeasey Carter.

Sophomore right-hander Adam Vetter (Crown Point, Indiana) took the loss for the Eagles in relief. Vetter (0-1) went an inning and allowed two hits and one earned run. USI senior right-hander Matt Keener (Newburgh, Indiana) started the game and earned a no-decision, allowing one earned run in seven strong innings.

The Eagles resume the spring road trip at 13th-ranked Augusta State University for a two-game series on Tuesday and Wednesday. Game times are 1:30 p.m. (CST) each day.
