Randy Holbrook (St. Louis, Missouri) was named Most Outstanding Player while scoring a game-high 23 points and grabbing nine rebounds as USI won its first ever GLVC Tournament championship by rolling past Northern Kentucky, 79-49, Sunday afternoon at Roberts Stadium.
Holbrook, a 6-9 senior center, recorded game-highs of 23 points and nine rebounds as the Screaming Eagles rolled to their 26th victory in 30 starts this year. USI, ranked No. 4 in the nation, has won 16 games in a row.
The No. 1-seeded Screaming Eagles jumped out to a 37-19 halftime lead. USI limited NKU to 6-22 shooting (27.3 percent) in the period. Northern Kentucky never recovered in falling to 14-15.
Freshman guard
Carl Richburg (Mason, Ohio) added 16 points on 6-8 shooting and was also named to the five-person All Tournament team. The Screaming Eagles hit 59.2 percent of their field goal tries (29-49), including 7-10 from the arc. USI won the rebounding battle, 31-25.
In the three games this week, USI set GLVC Tournament records by hitting 62.1 percent from the field (105-169) and 72.1 percent from beyond the three-point arc (31-43).
Mike Kelsey led Northern Kentucky with 14 points. Derek Smith added nine points and a game-high five rebounds. NKU shot 40 percent from the field (20-50), but could only manage 4-19 from the three-point line (21.1 percent).
Kelsey was named to the All Tournament team along with Tim Bauersachs (SIUE) and Sullivan Sykes (SJC) were also named to the All Tournament team.
