Eagles fall in first round of league tournament

EVANSVILLE, Ind.—Lewis University used a 25-5 first-half run to defeat the University of Southern Indiana women's basketball team, 64-32, in the first round of the GLVC Tournament at Roberts Stadium.

Lewis (19-9), seeded second in the tournament, held the Eagles to just five field goals and 21.7 percent shooting in the first half to build a 39-14 halftime advantage. Sophomore forward Mary Moskal scored 14 of her game-high 16 points in the opening period, while sophomore forward Darcee Schmidt chipped in all 13 of her points in the first half.

The seventh-seeded Screaming Eagles (14-14) struggled to do anything offensively in the contest, shooting a dismal 25.5 percent for the game, as they turned out their lowest point total since the 1976-77 season. USI had 26 turnovers in the contest and made just 13 field goals while going 0-of-13 from behind the arc.

Senior center Andrea Engleking (Charlottesville, Indiana) led the Eagles with eight points and seven rebounds, while junior forward Sabrina Brandon (Danville, Indiana) added seven points and six rebounds.

Senior guard Jamie Truitt (Owensboro, Kentucky) finished her career as the Eagles' 13th all-time leading scorer with 846 career points. Truitt, a two-time All-GLVC performer, finished the contest with five points.

The career of senior center Megan Nelson (Clarendon Hills, Illinois) also came to a close Friday night. Nelson finished with four points and five rebounds.

Lewis will meet the winner of the University of Indianapolis-University of Wisconsin-Parkside game Saturday at 8:30 p.m. in the semifinals of the GLVC Tournament. UI is the sixth seed in the tournament, while UWP is the third seed.
