#9 Southern Indiana (20-4, 15-2 GLVC): 71
@Quincy (15-9, 11-6 GLVC): 63
QUINCY, Ill.—The University of Southern Indiana men's basketball team reached 20 wins for the 13th straight season in a come-from-behind triumph over Quincy University, 71-63, in Quincy, Illinois, Thursday evening. USI, which has won 10 in a row and 15 of the last 16, raises its record to 20-4 overall and 15-2 in the GLVC, while Quincy goes to 15-9 overall, 11-6 GLVC.
The victory puts the Eagles one game closer to clinching at least a share of the GLVC regular season crown and the number one seeding in the GLVC Tournament. The magic number drops to two after the University of Indianapolis defeated Saint Joseph's College, 89-84, and Southern Illinois University Edwardsville defeated Kentucky Wesleyan College, 68-56. Any combination of two USI wins or loses by Indianapolis and SIUE will result in the Eagles winning the league outright.
USI freshman point guardÂ
Carl Richburg (Mason, Ohio) hit a three-point field goal with 5:44 to play to give the Screaming Eagles a 60-59 lead and sparked a 14-4 run in the final 5:44 of the game. Down the stretch, senior guardÂ
Cris Brunson (Evansville, Indiana) scored the final five points for the Eagles, hitting a three-pointer to make the score 69-63 with 1:04 left and a pair of the free throws with 33 seconds for the 71-63 final.
The Eagles trailed by six twice during the second half after posting a one point lead at halftime, 36-35.
Brunson was joined in double-figure scoring by junior guardÂ
David Bryant (Louisville, Kentucky) and junior forwardÂ
Chris Thompson (Starke, Florida) dropped in 11 points and 10 points, respectively. USI was led on the boards by senior centerÂ
Reque Newsome (St. Petersburg, Florida) with eight rebounds.
USI concludes the first half of a four-game road trip Saturday afternoon at the University of Missouri-St. Louis. Game time is 3 p.m. The Rivermen, who were idle Thursday evening, are 7-16 overall, 4-13 GLVC.
