EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The University of Southern Indiana men's soccer team could not off Lewis University Sunday afternoon at Strassweg Field, losing the home finale, 2-1. USI, who will finish the 2005 campaign at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville Tuesday, falls to 5-12-0 overall and 3-9-0 GLVC.
Lewis raises its record to 10-7-0 overall, 8-5-0 GLVC.
USI freshman goalkeeper
Jake Bryan (Portage, Indiana) nearly saved the day for the Eagles, who were out shot 34-5. Bryan made 15 saves and allowed just the two goals after taking over for senior goalkeeper
Kyle Penick (Evansville, Indiana).
Penick was given a ceremonial start in goal on Senior Day, but had to leave the contest due to injuries he suffered in Friday's loss to the University of Wisconsin-Parkside.
The Flyers drew first blood in the first half when defender Corey Mastey scored off a corner kick by midfielder Tito Lara at the 8:57. The Eagles would draw even and send the match into the intermission tied 1-1 on an unassisted goal by sophomore forward
Michael Dugger (Hanson, Kentucky) at 14 minutes.
The goal was Dugger's third of the season.
Lewis dominated the match in the second half, pounding the USI goal with 19 shots. Lara scored the game-winner when he put away the rebound of a shot by back Neil Van Huis at the 83:10 mark.
The USI season finale at SIUE is scheduled for a 4 p.m. kick-off.
