USI breaks losing streak with shutout

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The University of Southern Indiana men's soccer team broke a five-matching losing streak with a 2-0 shutout of Saint Joseph's College Sunday afternoon at Strassweg Field. The victory raises USI's record to 4-7-0 overall and 2-5-0 in the GLVC, while SJC falls to 4-9-0 overall, 1-6-0 GLVC.

USI junior back Brian Shepherd (St. Louis, Missouri) provided all of the offense the Screaming Eagles would need in the first half, scoring his third and fourth goal of the year on penalty kicks. USI was twice awarded penalty kicks after Pumas fouled the Eagles in the penalty area.

Between the posts, senior goalkeeper Kyle Penick (Evansville, Indiana) earned his third shutout of the year and the 14th of his career. Penick made three saves, including the block of a penalty kick in the second half.

Penick has recorded a 0.63 goals against average (GAA) in his last three matches, compared to his season GAA of 1.79.

USI returns to the road in the GLVC Friday when it travels to Kentucky Wesleyan College for conference match-up. Kick-off is scheduled for 3 p.m.
