Southern Indiana (11-4, 7-2 GLVC): 62
@Wisconsin-Parkside (6-10, 3-6 GLVC): 58
RENSSELAER, Ind. – University of Southern Indiana senior guardÂ
Cris Brunson (Evansville, Indiana) gave the Screaming Eagles the lead and freshman guardÂ
Carl Richburg (Mason, Ohio) sealed the victory to defeat the University of Wisconsin-Parkside, 62-58, Saturday afternoon in Kenosha, Wisconsin. USI goes to 11-4 overall and 7-2 in the GLVC, while UWP goes to 6-11 overall, 3-7 GLVC.
In the final minute down 58-56, Brunson hit his first three point field goal in four games to give USI a 59-58 lead. After UWP's freshman guard Tyrone Deacon missed a pair of free throws with 11 seconds to play, Richburg sank two from the charity stripe to seal the victory.
USI senior forwardÂ
Reque Newsome (St. Petersburg, Florida) finished the scoring with a free throw with one second to play for the 62-58 final.
The fantastic finish capped a USI comeback from a pair of 17 point first half deficits. The Eagles were unable to get the offense going early for a second straight game, posting only one field goal in the first 5:25 of the contest. The Rangers would build their lead to 20-3 and 22-5 before the USI could get the offense going.
After narrowing the lead to 35-26 by halftime, the Eagles used a 13-1 run to take their first lead of the game 39-36. UWP bounced back to retake the lead and extended the margin to six points, 51-45.
Brunson scored five of his 13 points in USI's 17-7 run to finish the game. Richburg led all Eagles in scoring for the third straight game with 15 points. Junior guardÂ
David Bryant (Louisville, Kentucky), who missed the last three games with a knee injury, rounded out the double-figure scorers with 11 points.
USI outrebounded the Rangers, 36-31, and was led by senior centerÂ
Randy Holbrook (St. Louis, Missouri) with 12 rebounds. Holbrook has reached double-digits in rebounding three straight games.
The Eagles return to the friendly surroundings of the Physical Activities Center next week to begin a four-game home stand. USI starts the homestand with GLVC front-running Southern Illinois University Edwardsville on January 20 at 7:30 p.m.
