USI and Keener blast OCU

Southern Indiana (15-23) 16 Kentucky Wesleyan (17-10) 8

Evansville, IN The University of Southern Indiana baseball team scored five times in the second and the seventh innings to defeat Oakland City University 16-8 Friday afternoon at the USI Baseball Field. USI raises its record to 15-23 overall, while OCU falls to 17-10.

The Screaming Eagles picked up nine runs and nine hits out of the top four spots in the line-up, led by junior rightfielder Matt Keener (Newburgh, Indiana). Keener was three-for-five with two home runs, three runs scored, and four RBIs.

In addition to Keener, junior centerfielder Noah Wetzel (New Salisbury, Indiana) and junior shortstop Corey Gorers (LaPorte, Indiana) each scored three times and collected a pair of hits. Junior second baseman Bryan Davis (West Chester, Ohio) also drove in three RBIs.

After jumping out to a 5-0 lead, the Mighty Oaks scored five unanswered runs to tie the game 5-5 in the top of the fourth. USI responded with a pair of tallies in the in the fourth to retake the lead for good 7-5. The Eagles sealed the victory with a run in the fifth, three runs in the sixth and five tallies more in the seventh.

Junior right-hander Jae Fadde (West Lafayette, Indiana) picked up the win for USI, going 6.2 innings to pick up his first victory of the season. Fadde allowed 11 hits and seven runs, while striking out three.

The non-conference three-game series switches sites Saturday, April 10, as the Eagles travel to Oakland City, Indiana, to take on the Mighty Oaks in a doubleheader. The first pitch Saturday is scheduled for noon.
