First-half run propels Eagles to 90-73 victory over Lewis

Into semifinals of GLVC Tournament

EVANSVILLE, Ind.—The University of Southern Indiana women's basketball team used a 16-0 run and a plus-25 rebounding advantage to get by Lewis University, 90-73, Thursday evening in the first round of the GLVC Tournament at Roberts Stadium.

USI (20-8) trailed 20-13 eight minutes into the contest before senior forward Shannon Wells (Merrillville, Indiana) caught fire. Wells started the Screaming Eagles run with a free throw that led to a string of seven straight points by the senior forward.

By the time the fifth-seeded Eagles tied the game at 20, Wells had scored 11 of USI's points. She finished the game with 16 points and a game-high 11 rebounds, marking her second double-double in three games.

Junior center Megan Nelson (Clarendon Hills, Illinois) hit a jumper inside the paint with 9:26 remaining in the opening period to give USI its first lead of the contest, a lead it would not relinquish the rest of the game.

Fellow classmate Kennitra Johnson (New Albany, Indiana) connected on a three-pointer and senior forward Shajuan Lindsey (Midlothian, Illinois) converted a lay up before Nelson sank a pair of free throws to cap off USI's run that put it up 29-20 with less than seven minutes to play in the first half.

USI dominated the inside in the first 20 minutes, gaining a 27-12 advantage on the boards and outscoring the fourth-seeded Flyers 16-10 inside the lane. USI shot 48.6 percent from the field in the opening half as it went into the locker room with a 44-34 lead.

Lindsey and Nelson helped the Eagles extend their dominance in the second half as the two combined for 19 points and six rebounds to help USI build a 19-point lead late in the game.

Lindsey finished the game with a team-leading 18 points to go along with eight rebounds, while Nelson went 6-of-6 from the field to finish with a season-high 15 points. She added five rebounds and three blocked shots.

Junior guard Jamie Truitt (Owensboro, Kentucky) chipped in 12 points, while Johnson scored seven points and had a game-high six assists.

Defensively, the Eagles held the Flyers to 36.9 percent from the field in the game. Senior forward Bryanne Callahan scored a game-high 19 points to go along with a team-leading eight rebounds, while freshmen forwards Mary Moskal and Darcee Schmidt chipped in 14 points apiece.

Lewis ends its season with a 16-12 record.

The Eagles, who have won seven straight games in the GLVC Tournament dating back to the 2000-01 season, will play the winner of top-seeded Quincy University and eighth-seeded Southern Illinois University Edwardsville in the GLVC semifinals at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday.
