USI wins at IU Southeast 8-5

Southern Indiana (4-2): 8
@Indiana-Southeast (1-8-1): 5

The University of Southern Indiana baseball team scored eight runs in the first four innings and held on to defeat Indiana University Southeast, 8-5, Tuesday afternoon in New Albany, Indiana. USI raises its record to 4-2 overall, while IUS falls to 1-8-1 in 2004.

Freshman right-hander Aaron Clark (Madisonville, Kentucky) picked up his first collegiate win in relief for the Screaming Eagles. Clark allowed only three hits and two walks in two innings, while striking out one.

Clark relieved USI starting right-hander Matt Keener (Newburgh, Indiana), who went the first 4 2/3 innings for a second straight start. Keener gave up six hits, four runs (two earned) and two walks.

Junior right-hander Matt Goans (Evansville, Indiana) picked up his first save of the year, getting the final two outs of the eighth inning in relief of freshman right-hander Adam Summers (Dyer, Indiana) and closing the game out in the ninth. Summers pitched 2/3 of an inning in relief of Clark, getting the Eagles out of a two-out bases loaded jam in the seventh.

In the field and at the plate, the Eagles were led by junior shortstop Corey Goers (LaPorte, Indiana). Goers sparkled in the field with a pair of diving stops to end Grenadier rallies in the seventh and eighth, while going two-for-four with a pair of RBIs.

The Eagles resume the 2004 schedule by flying south for their spring road trip, beginning at West Georgia State University Saturday and Sunday, March 6-7. The Saturday doubleheader and the Sunday single are scheduled for a noon (CT) starts.
