Saturday curse continues for Eagles

USI women now 1-6 on Saturdays after 91-83 loss

EVANSVILLE, Ind.—Saturday's have been rough for the University of Southern Indiana women's basketball team this season and today was not much different. The Screaming Eagles, who are 13-1 when not playing on Saturdays, saw their record on Saturdays slip to 1-6 after falling to Bellarmine University, 91-83, at the Physical Activities Center.

After battling to a three-point halftime advantage, the Eagles saw their shooting percentage fall from 50.0 percent to 30.6 percent in the second stanza. As a result the Knights outscored the Eagles by 11 in the final period to escape with an eight point victory.

USI (14-7, 8-7 GLVC) jumped out to a quick seven-point lead, but that was as much separation as the Eagles could come up with as the Knights kept it close and even took a lead late in the opening frame.

Down by two with less than two minutes in the half, the Eagles reeled off a 6-1 run to grab a 48-45 halftime advantage.

Junior guard Jamie Truitt (Owensboro, Kentucky) and senior forward Shannon Wells (Merrillville, Indiana) led the Eagles with 13 points apiece in the first half.

The Eagles built their lead back to six points early in the second period, but an 11-2 Bellarmine run put the Knights ahead by three (62-59) five minutes into the final period. The Knights used a 9-2 run later in the half to go up by six before building their lead to as many as nine in the closing seconds of the contest.

"We scored enough points to win," Head Coach Rick Stein said following the loss. "We couldn't get stops and we couldn't keep them (Bellarmine) away from the goal a few times and they have finishers. They've got kids that can make plays and make baskets."

Truitt led five USI players in double-figures with 18 points. Wells finished with 16 points and freshman point guard Lauren Parrish (Shepherdsville, Kentucky) tied a career-high with 15 points to go along with a team-leading four assists. Senior forward Shajuan Lindsey (Midlothian, Illinois) and junior center Andrea Engleking (Charlottesville, Indiana) chipped in 13 and 10 points, respectively.

Bellarmine (14-7, 10-5 GLVC) also had five players score in double figures, led by junior forward Lynn Johnson's 22. Senior center Shanta Bowens scored 15 points and grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds, while junior point guard Princess Wimsatt chipped in 13 points and dished out a game-high 13 assists.

The Eagles will return to action Wednesday, February 11, when they host Wayne State University (Mich.) in a 7 p.m. tip-off at the PAC.
