Eagles post a season-best 117 points in victory

Evansville, IN—The #16-ranked University of Southern Indiana men's basketball team posted a season-best for points in a 117-78 victory over the University of Missouri-St. Louis Saturday afternoon at the Physical Activities Center. USI raises its record to 19-4 overall and 12-4 in the GLVC, while UMSL falls to 9-14, 5-11 GLVC.

The Screaming Eagles busted out of the gate early this afternoon, hitting 10 long-range bombs to post a 23-point lead at the intermission, 57-34.

USI junior guard Cris Brunson (Evansville, Indiana) and senior center John Oden (St. Louis, Missouri) led the Screaming Eagles with perfect first half performances. Brunson scored 12 of his 17 points in the first half, by hitting all four of his shot from beyond the three-point arc. Oden's perfect 5-5 from the field included spectacular dunks and followed Brunson with 11 points in the first stanza and had 15 points for the game.

As a team, the Eagles shot 61.1 percent (22-36) from the field and 76.9 percent (10-13) from long range in the first half. On the opposite end of the floor, USI held the Rivermen to 40 percent (14-35) from the field and just 13 rebounds.

In the second half, USI was an identical 61.1 percent (22-36) from the field and continued to blast away from long range with another seven three-point field goals. The Eagles would eventually build the lead to as many as 44 points, 106-62, with just over five minutes to play.

Freshman forward Geoff Van Winkle (Ferdinand, Indiana) led five USI players in double figure scoring with 18 points. In addition to Van Winkle, Brunson, and Oden, senior guard Joe Gordon (Palm Bay, Florida) dropped in 17 points and junior center Randy Holbrook (St. Louis, Missouri) had 14 points.

Holbrook had a game-high 10 rebounds to post his second double-double of the year.

On the career statistics board, senior forward Billy Harris (Carbondale, Illinois) scored eight points and moved into the USI top five all-time in scoring with 1,271 career points. Harris is only the sixth player in USI history have 1,200 points and over 600 rebounds in their collegiate career.

The Eagles, who complete the homestand with a perfect 3-0 record, will make their final road trip of the regular season next week. USI travels to Southern Illinois University Edwardsville Thursday, February 19, and to Lewis University Saturday, February 21. Tip-off next Thursday is 7:30 p.m., while Saturday's start time will be 3:15 p.m.
