Eagles prepare for holiday run

EVANSVILLE, Ind.—The University of Southern Indiana women's basketball team will have four games during the semester break starting with West Virginia Wesleyan College at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Physical Activities Center.

USI (6-2) has won two straight games and will have two home games—the Screaming Eagles host the University of North Alabama December 22 at 7 p.m.—prior to Christmas and will head north to take on Northwood University (Dec. 30) and Ferris State University (Dec. 31) in the GLIAC/GLVC Holiday Classic in Midland, Michigan.

Leading the Eagles into Sunday's game against WVWC is senior guard Jamie Truitt (Owensboro, Kentucky) and senior forward/center Andrea Engleking (Charlottesville, Indiana). Truitt is averaging 13.4 points per game (ppg), 16.8 ppg in USI's last four games, while Engleking is averaging 11.3 ppg, 15.5 ppg in USI's last four games.

One of the most welcomed surprises of the early season for the Eagles has been the three-point threat junior guard/forward Ashley Green (Otterbein, Indiana) has presented. Green has connected on nine of her last 11 attempts from three-point range and is connecting on 59.1 percent of her attempts for the season. She is converting a league-best 78.6 percent of her shots from behind the arc against GLVC opposition.

Green, who is averaging 8.4 ppg, is tied with junior forward Sabrina Brandon (Danville, Illinois) for the team lead with 5.8 rebounds per game (rpg). Brandon is adding 9.4 ppg.

The WVWC Bobcats (4-3) are led by senior forward/center Frances Carvajal and sophomore guard Sarah Grab. Carvajal averages a team-best 21.3 ppg and 9.4 rpg, while Grab is chipping in 15.1 ppg and 5.7 rpg.

This will mark the first time the two teams have played each other. Next week's game against UNA also will be the first time the Eagles have played the Lions in women's basketball.

UNA is 3-7 and plays Martin Methodist Thursday prior to playing the Eagles. Junior guard Lauren Qualls leads the Lions with 16.0 ppg.
