Eagles looking to clinch title

EVANSVILLE, Ind.—The University of Southern Indiana volleyball team can clinch the GLVC championship Friday when the Screaming Eagles travel to St. Louis to take on the University of Missouri-St. Louis in the Mark Twain Building at 7 p.m. USI will finish the regular season when it plays Quincy University at the Pepsi Arena in Quincy, Illinois, Saturday at 3 p.m.

USI (19-6, 13-1 GLVC) is ranked eighth in the latest Great Lakes Regional rankings and can set a school-record for conference victories in a season with a pair of wins this weekend. The Eagles posted a 14-2 league record in 2000.

The Eagles defeated UMSL, 3-0, and Quincy, 3-1, earlier in the season and are looking to close out the regular season with a victory for the sixth straight season. A USI victory or a Southern Illinois University Edwardsville loss will ensure that the GLVC Tournament will be played at the Physical Activities Center November 11-13. The Eagles have already clinched a first-round bye.

Senior middle blocker Leeanne Gross (Decatur, Indiana) needs 30 kills to move into second place on USI's all-time kills list. Gross, who leads the team with 3.29 kills per game, currently has 1,450 career kills to go along with 1,000 career digs.

Complimenting Gross on the inside is junior middle blocker Laura Ellerbusch (Newburgh, Indiana), who leads the team with a .347 attacking percentage and 0.89 blocks per game. Ellerbusch, a three-time GLVC "Player of the Week" in 2004, also ranks second on the team with 3.23 kills per game.

Freshman setter Stephanie Wilson (Terre Haute, Indiana) needs 47 assists to break the school-record for assists by a freshman, held by former All-American Kim Boehmer (2000). Wilson currently has 1,190 assists and is second in the GLVC with 12.80 assists per game.
