USI women’s hoops open GLVC play

No. 20 Indianapolis offers tough test

EVANSVILLE, Ind.—The University of Southern Indiana women's basketball team opens its 2004-05 GLVC schedule Friday at 5:15 p.m. when No. 20-ranked University of Indianapolis visits the Physical Activities Center.

USI (3-0) is coming off back-to-back blowout victories in which it averaged 96.5 points and held the opposition to 41.0 points.

One consistent throughout the Screaming Eagles first three games has been their ability to control the inside game. USI is out-rebounding the opposition by an average of 51.0 rebounds per game to 35.0 rpg, while outscoring the opposition in the paint by an average of 45.3 points per game to 17.3 ppg.

However, it was not the inside game that the Eagles thrived upon in their last meeting with the Greyhounds, an 86-68 victory to close out the 2003-04 regular season. Senior guard Jamie Truitt (Owensboro, Kentucky) connected on six three pointers and finished with a career-high 31 points.

USI shot 53.1 percent from the field, including a 47.1 percent clip from behind the arc, in that contest as it went into the GLVC Tournament with a two-game winning streak.

This season, the Eagles have spread the wealth as seven players are averaging better than 8.0 points per game.

Freshman forward Jessica Grimaldo (Carmi, Illinois) has come off the bench to average a team-best 16.7 ppg, including back-to-back 20-plus point outings in USI's last two contests. Truitt is USI's second-leading scorer with 13.5 ppg.

Indianapolis (3-0) is led by senior guards Erin Moran and Amy Wisser, who are averaging 20.3 and 16.5 ppg, respectively. Wisser missed the Greyhounds' last game, a 60-46 victory over the University of Findlay, with an injury.

Sophomore forward Amanda Norris leads the Greyhounds on the boards with 8.3 rpg, while senior point guard Amanda Davidson is averaging a team-high 6.7 assists per outing.

On Sunday, the Eagles will welcome a Saint Joseph's College team that is 1-2 on the season. The Pumas, who play the University of Missouri-St. Louis Friday, are led by senior forward/center Courtney Rosenbaum, who is averaging 19.3 points and 8.7 rebounds per game. Tip-off for that game is slated for 1 p.m. at the PAC.
