Stein looking for 100th victory Sunday

EVANSVILLE, Ind.—University of Southern Indiana women's basketball Head Coach Rick Stein will have his first crack at win number 100 Sunday when the Screaming Eagles host Calumet College of St. Joseph's for a 2 p.m. tip-off at the Physical Activities Center.

A victory Sunday would make Stein the third coach in the program's 30-year history to reach 100 wins and the fastest to do so. Sunday will be Stein's 151st game at the helm of the Eagles—Chancellor Dugan reached 100 wins in her 158th game. He needs just four victories to surpass Ruth Waller for second place on USI's all-time wins list.

Stein recorded his 99th victory Monday night when his Eagles downed the University of Alabama-Huntsville, 60-48, in the season-opener.

The Eagles were led by junior forward Sabrina Brandon (Danville, Illinois) who had a game-high 18 points to go with eight rebounds. It marked the third straight season and fourth in the past five years that a newcomer has led the Eagles in scoring in their season-opener.

Freshman guard/forward Marshay Jolly (Merrillville, Indiana) and junior guard Tiara Brown (Normal, Illinois) scored 13 and 11 points, respectively, while junior forward Ashley Green (Otterbein, Indiana) brought down a career-high 11 rebounds to go with a career-high tying five assists and five steals.

Stein, who was an assistant at USI from 1991-99, has been a part of 258 victories, (63.6 percent of USI's all-time wins), four conference championships, three GLVC Tournament titles, all seven of USI's NCAA II Tournament appearances, and two NCAA II Elite Eights.

His first victory came in his first game at the helm of the Eagles, a 63-57 victory over Rockhurst University at the News Press Invitational in St. Joseph's Missouri on November 19, 1999.

From that point, Stein was named the GLVC Coach of the Year in 2000-01 and became the fastest coach in the program's history to reach 50 wins when he led the Eagles to an 80-68 road victory over the University of Indianapolis on December 6, 2001. It took him just 67 games to accomplish the feat.

At the helm of USI, Stein has directed the squad to three NCAA II Tournament appearances, two GLVC Tournament titles, and the 2001 Elite Eight.
