USI men’s soccer falls in season opener, 3-2

University of Southern Indiana (0-1-0): 2 University of Missouri-Rolla (1-1-1): 3

The University of Southern Indiana men's soccer team stumbled in the season opener, 3-2, to the University of Missouri-Rolla in Rolla, Missouri, Friday night. The Screaming Eagles will try to get back on track Sunday, September 7, when they host Spalding University for a 1 p.m. match at Strassweg Field.

USI jumped out to an early 1-0 lead on the first goal of the season by senior midfielder Duncan Bray (Scotland) just 6:54 into the match. Senior forward Matt Settles (Evansville, Indiana) was credited with an assist after feeding the ball to Bray on the breakaway.

UMR bounced back with two unanswered goals within 45 seconds to take a 2-1 lead. The Miners scored at 11:06 on a goal by midfielder/forward Ryan Coates and at 11:48 on a goal by midfielder/back Andy Becker.

The Eagles came back to tie the score, 2-2, on freshman forward Andrew Hanlon's (Noblesville, Indiana) first collegiate goal. He scored the unassisted tally with 1:54 to play in the first half to send the teams into the locker rooms tied.

The Miners and Coates waited only 34 seconds into the second half to get the go ahead and winning goal. Coates scored from 10 yards out off a pass from back/midfielder Derek Pelate.
