USI volleyball to open home schedule

After four straight weekends and 14 matches, the University of Southern Indiana volleyball team will finally have the opportunity to play in front of its home crowd. The Screaming Eagles, 11-3 overall and 1-1 in the GLVC, are slated to open their home schedule Friday, September 26, against Saint Joseph's College. Match time is 7 p.m.

USI finishes its two-match homestand when the University of Indianapolis visits the Physical Activities Center Saturday, September 27, for a 2 p.m. match. USI is extending an invitation to all Evansville area middle school volleyball teams to attend Saturday's match.

After falling for the first time in seven matches, the Eagles will be looking to get back on track against a team that defeated them in three games a year ago. Revenge will be fresh in USI's mind as the loss cost prevented the Eagles from winning the GLVC regular season title.

On Saturday, the Eagles will have a chance to extend their winning streak over Indianapolis to seven. USI leads the all-time series 12-7, since 1989, after defeating the Greyhounds 3-0 during the regular season and 3-2 in the first round of the GLVC Tournament last season.

Indianapolis and St. Joseph's battled each other Tuesday night, with Indianapolis coming out with a 3-0 victory in Rensselaer. Saint Joseph's enters Friday's match with the Eagles with a 4-13 (1-2 GLVC) record while Indianapolis enters the weekend's action with a 12-7 (2-1 GLVC) record.

Leading the Eagles is sophomore middle hitter Laura Ellerbusch (Newburgh, Indiana). Ellerbusch is second in the GLVC with a team-high .386 attacking percentage and second on the team with 3.5 kills per game. She also has a team-leading 45 blocks.

Junior middle blocker Leeanne Gross (Decatur, Indiana) leads the Eagles with 3.58 kills and 2.68 digs per game while senior setter Kim Boehmer (Cincinnati, Ohio) is third in the GLVC with a team leading 11.64 assists per game. Boehmer is second on the squad with 2.6 digs per game.

While Boehmer is 385 assists away from 5,000 for her career and Gross is 77 kills away from 1,000 for her career, the USI volleyball program is just 10 victories away from 400.
