USI women’s soccer defeats 16th ranked Wheeling Jesuit Meek gets first victory as collegiate head coach

University of Southern Indiana (1-0-0): 3 @#16 Wheeling Jesuit University (0-1-0): 2

The University of Southern Indiana women's soccer team overcame a 2-0 halftime deficit and a lightning delay to defeat 16th-ranked Wheeling Jesuit University, 3-2, Friday night in Wheeling, West Virginia. USI, 1-0-0, will finish the road trip to Wheeling by playing Davis & Elkins College Sunday, August 31.

The Cardinals built the 2-0 lead in a pouring rain during the first half. Before the second half could begin, the game was delayed for 45 minutes due to lightning.

After the delay, the match belonged to the Eagles. USI cut the lead to 2-1 on a goal by sophomore forward Alisann Shetler (Evansville, Indiana), her first of the year. Senior forward Aisha Earle-Smith (Spring, Texas) assisted on the play.

USI tied the game and took the lead on a pair of goals by Earle-Smith. Earle-Smith's first goal came off a pass from freshman forward Megan Williams (Mt. Vernon, Indiana), tying the score 2-2 with 14:55 to play.

Earle-Smith's gamewinner came with 10:37 to play off a pass from freshman midfielder Kara Marcum (Evansville, Indiana).

Not only did the USI victory get the squad off to a 1-0-0 start to the season, but marked the first collegiate victory for USI head coach Krissy Meek.
