Rebecca Cripe (Argos, Indiana) and sophomore forward
Alisann Shetler (Evansville, Indiana) combined for six goals and two assists to lead the USI women's soccer team to a 10-1 exhibition victory over Spalding University Sunday afternoon at Strassweg Field in Evansville, Indiana. With the win, the Screaming Eagles finish their exhibition schedule with a 2-0-0 record.
The Eagles scored early in the contest when Shetler hooked Cripe up with a ball that the freshman put into the back of the net. Less than a minute after Spalding scored to tie the game at 1-1, Cripe found the back of the net for the second time in the contest, this time unassisted.
Shetler added to USI's lead by kicking the ball to Cripe and immediately getting the ball back to put the ball into the back of the net. Cripe made it 4-1 later in the contest as she used a feed from junior back
Jennifer Johnson (Carmel, Indiana).
For the match, Cripe finished with four goals and an assist while Shetler added her second goal of the contest off a corner kick from junior back/midfielder
Lisa Stucki (Evansville, Indiana).
The Eagles finished the first period with a 5-1 lead, scoring their five goals off 12 shots. USI matched its offensive output from the first half by getting five of its 12 shots into the back of the net in the second stanza.
Also finishing with multiple goals was freshman back
Mindy Gardner (Aurora, Indiana). Gardner finished with two goals while fellow classmates
Kara Marcum (Evansville, Indiana) and
Megan Williams (Mt. Vernon, Indiana) rounded out USI's offensive with a goal each.
Williams also had an assist while
Kim Husky (Littleton, Colorado),
Amanda Cardwell (Evansville, Indiana), and
Aisha Earle-Smith (Spring, Texas) each recorded an assist.
The Eagles will open their 2003 regular season schedule at Wheeling Jesuit University Friday, August 29, at 5 p.m. They will return home to face McKendree College in their regular season home-opener Tuesday, September 2, at 5 p.m.
