USI women’s soccer explodes in exhibition

@University of Southern Indiana 19 (1-0 exhibition) Oakland City University 0 (0-1 exhibition)

The University of Southern Indiana women's soccer team put on an offensive demonstration Thursday evening at Strassweg Field in Evansville, Indiana. The Screaming Eagles reeled off 35 shots to top Oakland City University, 19-0, in their exhibition opener.

USI started the scoring in the first half as sophomore forward Alisann Shetler (Evansville, Indiana) used a feed from freshman midfielder Rebecca Cripe (Argos, Indiana) to get the ball into the back of the net.

Shetler returned the favor later in the half as she found Cripe for USI's second goal of the contest, giving the Eagles a comfortable 2-0 lead 17 minutes into the contest. Cripe, who finished with two goals, racked up four assists in the onslaught. Shetler finished with the hat-trick while adding an assist.

Freshman forward Megan Williams (Mt. Vernon, Indiana) also had an impressive debut for the Eagles as she found the back of the net a match-high four times, all coming in the first half.

The Eagles finished the first period with 10 goals on the strength of 20 shots. For the match, the Eagles prevented the Lady Oaks from taking a shot.

Also getting into the scoring act was senior forward Aisha Earle-Smith (Spring, Texas) and sophomore forward/midfielder Brooklyn Wilke (Evansville, Indiana). Earle-Smith ended with three goals, all of which came in the second half, and an assist. Wilke matched Earle-Smith with three goals of her own.

Although the records do not count (stats for exhibition contests are not official), USI topped its record for goals scored in a game and points in a game. The Eagles official record for goals in a game is 13 while its record for points in a game (goals=2/assists=1) is 37. USI finished with 51 points (19 goals and 13 assists) when the final horn sounded Thursday night.

The Eagles will return to action Sunday, August 24, as they host Spalding University in their final tune-up before regular season play begins. Kickoff is slated for 1 p.m. at Strassweg Field.
