The University of Southern Indiana baseball team lost the series finale with Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, 9-2, at the USI Baseball Field Sunday afternoon. The game was called due to rain in the top of the eighth.
USI's record falls to 13-16 overall and 5-8 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference, while SIUE goes to 14-14 overall, 8-9 GLVC.
After each team scored unearned runs in the first inning, the Cougars took control in the fourth inning with three runs. The Eagles responded in the bottom of the fourth with a home run by senior rightfielderÂ
Steve Owen (Wauwatosa, Wisconsin) to make the score 4-2. The home run was the first of only two Eagle hits on Sunday.
The home run was the second in as many days and the third in a week for Owen. The senior leads the team for the spring with six round-trippers.
The Cougars finished the scoring with a run in the sixth and four more in the seventh inning for the 9-2 final.

Bowie Johnson (Brazil, Indiana) took the loss for USI, falling to 0-5. Johnson, who made his first start of the spring Sunday, went 3 2/3 and allowed five hits, four runs (three earned) and walked two.
Sunday's game was the first of a seven-game homestand for the Eagles. USI will host Bellarmine University for a GLVC doubleheader Wednesday, April 9, at noon.
