Southern Indiana (22-24, 11-14 GLVC): 4 @Saint Jospeh's (26-22, 13-13 GLVC): 1
The University of Southern Indiana baseball team scored all the runs it would need in the first inning of a 4-1 victory over Saint Joseph's College Sunday afternoon in Rensselaer, Indiana. USI has won five of its last six to raise its record to 22-24 overall and 11-14 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference.
Sophomore designated hitterÂ
Matt Keener (Newburgh, Indiana) got USI on the board in the first inning with a bases-loaded double that scored senior leftfielder
Andy Nucci (Ft. Wayne, Indiana), and sophomore centerfielderÂ
Noah Wetzel (New Salisbury, Indiana). The Screaming Eagles had loaded the bases on a double by Nucci, a walk by Wetzel, and a single by senior rightfielderÂ
Steve Owen (Wauwatosa, Wisconsin).
Owen would come around to score the third run of the inning on an RBI single by senior first basemanÂ
Justin Konopacki (Ft. Wayne, Indiana).
The Eagles would finish their scoring with a tally in the top of the eighth. Owen singled in Nucci with one out to give USI a 4-0 lead at the time.
Senior left-handerÂ
Brian Anderson (Brazil, Indiana) led the Eagles on the mound and picked up his second victory of the week. Anderson went seven-plus innings and allowed five hits and one unearned run in the eighth while striking out three. Freshman right-handerÂ
Matt Goans (Evansville, Indiana) picked up his first save of the year, getting the Eagles and Anderson out of a bases-loaded jam in the eighth with only one run scoring.
The Eagles resume Great Lakes Valley Conference action at the University of Missouri-St. Louis Wednesday, April 30. The doubleheader is scheduled to begin at noon Wednesday. The Eagles will finish the regular season at home Saturday and Sunday, May 3-4, when they host Northern Kentucky University for a three-game series.
