Eagles leave hopes stranded in the ninth

@Quincy University (20-17, 11-10): 3 Southern Indiana (16-22, 7-12): 2

EVANSVILLE, Ind. -- The University of Southern Indiana baseball team left runners at the corners in a 3-2 loss to Quincy University Saturday afternoon in Quincy, Illinois. USI goes to 16-22 overall and 7-12 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference, while Quincy goes to 20-17 overall, 11-10 GLVC.

Entering the top of the ninth down 3-0, USI senior leftfielder Andy Nucci (Ft. Wayne, Indiana) started the inning off with a triple to right center. After senior second baseman Adam Schiff (Evansville, Indiana) lined out to the second baseman, senior rightfielder Steve Owen (Wauwatosa, Indiana) singled in Nucci with USI's first run of the game.

Owen advanced to second on a single by junior pinch hitter Toby Pritchard (Evansville, Indiana). The Eagles loaded the bases when sophomore centerfielder Noah Wetzel (New Salisbury, Indiana) reached on an error by QU senior right-hander Brandon DeJaynes. Owen scored when senior third baseman Bowie Johnson (Brazil, Indiana) hit into a fielder's choice, advancing Pritchard to third.

With runners at the corners and two outs, USI's rally was stopped on a ground ball to third by junior designated hitter Adam Anderson (Raleigh, Illinois) for the final out.

The Hawks had bounced out to a 3-0 lead with a pair of runs in the third inning and a single run in the fourth off of USI starting left-hander Joe Stanisz (Highland, Indiana). Stanisz, who fell to 2-2, went three-plus innings and allowed three runs (two earned) and seven hits.

The USI bullpen combination – junior right-hander Mike Kottmeyer (Boulder, Illinois), who went 3 2/3 innings, and junior right-hander Drew Neel (Newburgh, Indiana), who threw a scoreless 1 1/3 inning of work – held the Hawks scoreless in the final six innings.

The Eagles will return to USI for a busy week of baseball. At the USI Baseball Field, the Eagles will host a make-up doubleheader with Bellarmine University at noon Monday, April 21 and a single game with Kentucky Wesleyan College at noon Wednesday, April 23. On the road, USI will play at Indiana University-Southeast Tuesday, April 22, at 3 p.m. and a single game at Oakland City University Thursday, April 24, at 2 p.m.
