Eagles drop Might Oaks in home opener

Oakland City (0-1): 0
@Southern Indiana (3-2): 5

EVANSVILLE, Ind. -- With snow still on the warning track, the University of Southern Indiana baseball team opened the 2003 home schedule with a 5-0 victory over Oakland City University Tuesday afternoon at the USI Baseball Field. USI raises its record to 3-2 overall, while OCU falls to 0-1.

The Screaming Eagles started their scoring in the bottom of the first when senior second baseman Adam Schiff (Evansville, Indiana) tripled in senior leftfielder Andy Nucci (Ft. Wayne, Indiana) to make the score 1-0. USI went on to score one more in the second, two in the fifth, and one in the eight for the victory. Schiff was followed by RBI triples by sophomore designated hitter Toby Pritchard (Ft. Wayne, Indiana), and senior catcher Paul Kohler (Arnold, Missouri) in the win.

The Might Oaks were held scoreless by four USI pitchers, led by sophomore right-hander Matt Keener (Newburgh, Indiana). Keener went 6 2/3 innings, allowing just three hits and striking out six. Keener was followed to the mound by freshman right-hander Matt Goans (Evansville, Indiana), senior right-hander Dan Tomashek (Ft. Wayne, Indiana), and senior right-hander Bowie Johnson (Brazil, Indiana). Johnson was credited with his first save of the year.

The next action for the Eagles will be Thursday, March 6, at Brescia University. Game time is 3 p.m.
