The 22nd-ranked University of Southern Indiana men's basketball team had its 25-game home winning streak stopped, 89-84, by Kentucky Wesleyan College Saturday evening at the Physical Activities Center. USI, which also saw its nine-game winning streak come to an end, fell to 16-5 overall, 10-4 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference.
Fifth-ranked Kentucky Wesleyan goes to 19-2 overall, 12-2 in the GLVC.
The Eagles trailed early in the first half as the Panther were hot from the field, building a 32-15 lead. During that stretch, KWC was shooting 82 percent from the field. USI cut into the lead with a 10-0 run and was down by three, 42-39, with 3:53 to play in the half.
KWC regained its balance and used a 10-4 run to get the lead to 52-43 at intermission.
The second half saw the Eagles play much better and climb back into the game. USI, which outscored KWC in the second stanza 41-37, tied the game at 75-75 with KWC firing right back to take the lead.
The Eagles evened the score again at 84-84 with 1:12 to play, but Panther senior guard Marlon Parmer hit a three-pointer to give KWC the lead for good with 20 seconds to play. Parmer also hit two free throws with eight seconds to play for the final score of 89-84.
USI continued to have balanced play with four players scoring in double-figures. Sophomore guard
Cris Brunson (Evansville, Indiana) had a team-high 17 points, while senior forward
Diond're Givens (Mt. Vernon, Indiana) dropped in 14 points.
Junior forward
Clarence Chillers (Chicago, Illinois) recorded his second straight double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds and senior guard
Alan Goff (Terre Haute, Indiana) rounded out the double-digit scorers with 12 points.
Underneath the bucket, junior forward
Billy Harris (Carbondale, Illinois) had a game-high 11 rebounds.
USI hits the road next week in the GLVC for a pair of conference games, beginning Thursday, February 13, at Northern Kentucky University. Game time in Highland Heights is 6:45 p.m. (CT). The Eagles will finish the road trip with a 2 p.m. contest at the University of Indianapolis February 15. USI will start its final homestand of the year Thursday, February 20, when the University of Wisconsin-Parkside comes to the PAC.
