The University of Southern Indiana basketball team extended its winning to six straight with a 82-69 victory over Quincy University Thursday evening in Quincy, Illinois. USI raises its record to 21-5 overall and 15-4 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference, while Quincy falls to 12-14 overall, 6-13 GLVC.
The victory assures USI of at least a second or third place finish in the GLVC. The Eagles also have 13 of the last 14 games in the league.
After the score was tied 2-2, the Eagles never trailed in the game building two 12 point leads in the first half and went into the intermission with a 35-24 margin. The second half saw the Hawks get the lead down to four points, but that is as close as they would get.
The game was won on the boards as the smaller Eagles out-rebounded the bigger Hawks, 38-34. Junior forwardÂ
Clarence Chillers (Chicago, Illinois) grabbed a game-high 13 boards for USI.
USI had five players score in double digits, led by the 14 points of senior guard/forwardÂ
Alan Goff (Terre Haute, Indiana). Senior guardÂ
David Ragland (Evansville, Indiana) followed by Goff with 13 points, while senior forwardÂ
Diond're Givens (Mt. Vernon, Indiana), junior centerÂ
Reque Newsome (St. Petersburg, Florida) and sophomore guardÂ
Cris Brunson (Evansville, Indiana) had 11 points each.
USI concludes the 2002-03 regular season schedule Saturday, March 1 at the University of Missouri-St. Louis. Game time Saturday is 3:15 p.m. The Eagles begin GLVC Tournament action Thursday, March 6, at Roberts Stadium. Seeding for the tournament is still to be determined.
