The University of Southern Indiana women's basketball did not take advantage of the chance to clinch a spot in the Great Lakes Valley Conference Basketball Tournament, falling to Lewis University, 74-70, at the Physical Activities Center Saturday afternoon. USI falls to 7-17 overall and 5-12 in the GLVC, while Lewis goes to 9-16 overall, 5-13 GLVC.
The Screaming Eagles owned the first 10 minutes of the game, jumping out to a 5-0 lead early in the game. The Flyers eased their way back into the game and took a 17-15 lead with 8:38 to play in the first stanza and went into intermission with a 32-30 margin.
The Eagles tied the game 32-32 to open the second half, but Lewis took the lead for good with a 6-0 run. The Flyers built their lead to as many as 12 points on two different occasions before the Eagles tried to mount a comeback.
USI used a 15-7 run to get the lead down to two, 67-65, with 2:06 to play. Then Flyers' freshman guard Shante Glenn and senior guard Kari Wong hit a combined seven of eight from the charity strip to put the game out of reach.

Shajuan Lindsey (Midlothian, Illinois), who had a game-high 19 points. Senior forward/center
Africa Sherrod (Ft. Lauderdale, Florida) followed Lindsey with her GLVC leading 16th double-double of the year —17 points and 11 rebounds.
Also scoring in double figures was senior guard/forward
Sarah McIntosh (Cabery, Illinois) with 13 points junior guard/forward
Shannon Wells (Merrillville, Indiana), 11 points and sophomore guard
Amber Calhoun (Evansville, Indiana) 10 points.
The Eagles will conclude the 2002-03 home schedule with the rescheduled game against the University of Wisconsin-Parkside Sunday, February 23. Game time on Sunday is a special 3 p.m.
USI finishes the 2002-03 regular season on the road at Quincy University Thursday, February 27, and the University of Missouri-St. Louis Saturday, March 1. Game times next week are 5:15 p.m. Thursday and 1 p.m. Saturday. The women's GLVC Tournament is scheduled for Wednesday, March 5, through Saturday, March 8, at Roberts Stadium.
