USI volleyball falls in championship match

The fifth-seeded University of Southern Indiana volleyball team could not hold onto a 2-1 lead in the GLVC Tournament championship match, falling to the third-seeded University of Indianapolis, 3-2, Saturday afternoon in Highland Heights, Kentucky. USI falls to 21-9 overall in 2003, while Indianapolis goes to 29-10.

After dropping the first game of the match 30-19, the Screaming Eagles posted back-to-back wins by identical scores of 30-26. The Greyhounds bounced back to win 30-27 in game four and tie the match 2-2.

In the deciding fifth game, the Eagles jumped out to a 7-3 lead before the Greyhounds went on a 9-2 runs to take control of the match and make the score 12-9. USI got back into the game at 12-11 and 13-12, but was not able to get past Indianapolis, which finished the match with a 15-12 fifth game win.

USI was led in the match by freshman middle hitter Chelse Doubler (Griffin, Indiana), who had 19 kills and a team-high .275 hitting percentage. Senior outside hitter Ashley Riordan (Mt. Vernon, Indiana) followed Doubler with 16 kills, while All-GLVC junior middle blocker Leeanne Gross (Decatur, Indiana) and All-GLVC sophomore middle hitter Laura Ellerbush (Newburgh, Indiana) had 12 kills and 11 kills, respectively.

Four-time All-GLVC senior setter Kim Boehmer (Cincinnati, Ohio) led the Eagles with a match-high 60 assists to finish her career at USI.
