The University of Southern Indiana volleyball team fell to Lewis University, 3-1, Friday night at the Neil Carey Arena in Romeoville, Illinois. The Screaming Eagles fall to 14-6 overall and 3-4 in the GLVC while the Flyers improve to 12-6 overall and 4-2 in the GLVC.
USI had four players record 14 or more kills, but hit just .215 as a team as it fell 28-30, 26-30, 30-28, and 24-30.
Sophomore middle hitter
Laura Ellerbusch (Newburgh, Indiana) recorded a team-high 15 kills and three blocks while senior outside hitter
Ashley Riordan (Mt. Vernon, Indiana) and junior middle hitters
Leeanne Gross (Decatur, Indiana) and
Natalie Atzinger (Louisville, Kentucky) each finished with 14 kills.
Gross's performance lifted her career kill total to 1,000, making her the sixth player in school history to reach the mark. She needs just 22 kills to move into a tie for fifth place all-time at USI in career kills.
Senior setter
Kim Boehmer (Cincinnati, Ohio) finished with a match-high tying 56 assists to go along with 11 digs.
Defensively, Atzinger led the Eagles with 14 digs while Riordan and junior libero
Kristine Wheeler (Indianapolis, Indiana) finished with 13 and 12 digs, respectively.
The Eagles will return to action Saturday when they travel to Kenosha, Wisconsin, to take on the University of Wisconsin-Parkside in a 1 p.m. match.
