USI women’s basketball awakens

Tops Missouri-St. Louis 72-67

Senior guard Bethany Miller (Princeton, Indiana) connected on four free throws in the final 40 seconds of regulation to give the University of Southern Indiana women's basketball team a 72-67 victory over the University of Missouri-St. Louis Thursday evening at the Physical Activities Center in Evansville, Indiana. The win snaps USI's five-game loosing streak and raises its record to 5-9 overall, 3-4 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference, while the loss drops UMSL to 7-5 overall and 2-5 in the GLVC.

After going scoreless through the first 1:52 of the game, the Screaming Eagles came to life, grabbing a 17-6 lead with 11:47 to play in the first period. However, USI's 14 first-half turnovers helped the Riverwomen claw back into the game.

The Eagles saw the Riverwomen spin off an 8-0 run and a 13-7 run as they went into the locker room at halftime, trailing 35-32.

USI fired back in the second half, scoring two quick buckets to take the lead. The Eagles committed just six turnovers and shot 45.7 percent in from the floor in the second half as they found themselves up 60-57 with less than five minutes to play in the contest.

UMSL came back to tie the game at 62, but a jumper by freshman forward/center Meghann Schenk (Evansville, Indiana) and lay-up by Bethany Miller put the Eagles back up by four (66-62) with 2:27 to play.

After seeing the Riverwomen get back to within a point, Miller connected on 4-of-5 free throws to seal the victory for USI.

Senior forward/center Africa Sherrod (Ft. Lauderdale, Florida) went 9-of-13 from the floor as she led USI with a game-high 19 points and 10 rebounds. It is a conference-leading 11th time this season that Sherrod has recorded a double-double.

Senior guard/forward Sarah McIntosh (Cabery, Illinois) recorded 14 points and five rebounds while junior guard/forward Shannon Wells (Merrillville, Indiana) added 9 points, 8 rebounds, and a team-high 7 assists. Miller finished the game with eight points and two steals.

Leading the way for UMSL was senior forward Christy Lane and sophomore guard Ebonie Halliburton. Lane finished with a team-high18 points while Halliburton added 16 points and a game-high eight assists.

The Eagles will host Bellarmine University next Thursday, January 16. Bellarmine topped the Eagles, 61-59, in Louisville, Kentucky, earlier in the season. Tip-off is slated for a 5:15 p.m. start at the Physical Activities Center.
