Fouls and turnovers hurt Eagles in loss to Saint Joseph’s

The University of Southern Indiana women's basketball team committed 35 fouls and 30 turnovers as it lost to Saint Joseph's College, 93-69, Thursday evening in Rensselaer, Indiana. The Screaming Eagles fall to 6-11 overall and 4-6 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference while the Pumas improve to 9-8 overall and 6-4 in the GLVC.

After knotting the contest up at 15 seven minutes into opening frame, the Eagles found themselves playing catch-up throughout the rest of the game. SJC used a 15-3 run to take a 30-18 advantage with just under eight minutes to play in the first period.

The Eagles shots just 37 percent in the first stanza and15 first-half turnovers led to 18 Saint Joseph's points. For the game, the Pumas converted USI's 30 turnovers into 36 points.

Despite shooting 56.7 percent from the field in the second stanza, the Eagles could not string together any large runs. USI committed 22 fouls and sent the Pumas to the free throw line 29 times in the second half as it fell for the second straight time.

Senior forward/center Africa Sherrod (Ft. Lauderdale, Florida) scored 20 points and grabbed 11 rebounds to lead the way for the Eagles. Sherrod shot 6-of-10 from the floor, 2-of-3 from behind the arc, and connected on all six of her free throw attempts. She now has recorded a double-double in five straight games and has a conference-high 14 for the season.

Fellow classmate Bethany Miller (Princeton, Indiana) scored a season-best 12 points and dished out five assists while recording two steals to follow Sherrod. The five assists moved Miller into third all-time at USI in career assists (317) while the two steals moved her into a tie for third all-time at USI in career steals (177).

Junior guard/forward Shannon Wells (Merrillville, Indiana) tapped in with eight points and a game-high tying 11 rebounds.

USI will try to rebound from its loss this Saturday, January 25, as it travels to Kenosha, Wisconsin, to take on the University of Wisconsin-Parkside. UWP (8-9 overall, 4-6 GLVC) is coming off a 74-57 victory over the University of Missouri-St. Louis. The Eagles have not lost in 14 meetings with the Lady Rangers.
