The University of Southern Indiana volleyball team recorded its first win of the 2002 campaign with a convincing 3-0 victory over Bryant College, an NCAA II Tournament team in 2001, this evening at the University of North Alabama Volleyball Classic in Florence, Alabama. The Screaming Eagles will face sixth-ranked North Alabama at noon on Saturday and will finish their opening weekend with a match against Henderson State University at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday.
Sophomore middle hitter
Leeanne Gross (Decatur, Indiana) and sophomore middle blocker
Natalie Atzinger (Louisville, Kentucky) each recorded four kills to lead the Eagles to a 30-17 victory in game one. Both finished with eight kills, just one off the team and match high.
Senior outside hitter
Shannon Wells (Merrillville, Indiana) recorded nine kills in the final two games of the match as USI cruised to a pair of 30-16 wins.
Wells and Gross each had a match-high 11 digs while junior setter
Kim Boehmer (Cincinnati, Ohio) recorded a match-high 27 assists.
With her match-high four service aces, Wells surpassed 200 for her career. Wells is USI's all-time leader in career service aces with 201.
USI will open its 2002 home schedule Monday, September 2, as it plays host to McKendree College. Match-time is slated for 5 p.m. at the Physical Activities Center.
