University of Southern Indiana freshman forward
Alisann Shetler (Evansville, Indiana) waited just 1:29 of her first collegiate match to score her first goal as a Screaming Eagle and help propel USI to a 3-2 victory over the University of Montevallo Friday night at Strassweg Field. The victory marks the fifth time in seven seasons that USI has started the year off with a win.
With the early lead, the Eagles put the game away on two goals by junior forward
Aisha Earle-Smith (Spring, Texas). Earle-Smith gave USI a 2-0 lead just under five minutes after Shetler's goal when she scored unassisted.
Montevallo fought back to within one goal with a tally at the 11:29 for the halftime score of 2-1 in favor of the Eagles.
Earle-Smith gave USI its two-goal advantage back just after halftime with a goal at the 50:54 mark. She was assisted on the play by sophomore midfielder
Courtney Reeder (Carbondale, Illinois) and senior midfielder
Jill Hejlek (St. Louis, Missouri).
Montevallo made it close at the end, outshooting the Eagles 20-9 and closing the gap to 3-2 with 15:17 to play in the contest. USI senior goalkeeper
Aude de La Salle (France) led the way between the posts with six saves in the second half to preserve the victory.
The next action for the Eagles will be on a neutral site in Indianapolis, Indiana, when they play Hillsdale College Friday, September 6, and Grand Valley State University Sunday, September 8. USI's next home match will be Tuesday, September 10, when Missouri Baptist College visits Strassweg Field for a 7:30 p.m. contest.
