USI scores four in ninth for victory

OWENSBORO, Ky. --The University of Southern Indiana baseball team scored four times in the top of the ninth to defeat Kentucky Wesleyan College, 9-6, in Owensboro, Kentucky Monday afternoon. USI raised its record to 13-14 overall and 6-5 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference, while KWC fell to 13-9 overall, 4-6 GLVC.

USI senior pinch hitter Brian Scroggins (Edwardsville, Illinois) doubled in the winning runs with two out in the ninth inning, knocking in junior shortstop Josh Perkins (Lafayette, Indiana) and junior rightfielder Steve Owen (Wauwatosa, Wisconsin). Junior second baseman Adam Schiff (Evansville, Indiana), who had singled with one out, tied the game at 6-6 by scoring on a wild pitch.

The Eagles' winning pitcher was sophomore right-hander Drew Neel (Newburgh, Indiana), who threw 1 2/3 innings of scoreless relief work. Neel, 1-2 this spring, relieved junior left-hander Brian Anderson (Brazil, Indiana), who started and went 6 2/3 innings. Anderson allowed 10 hits and six runs, while striking out four.

Junior right-hander Bowie Johnson (Brazil, Indiana) and senior left-hander Darrin Weeks (Forrest, Illinois) finished the game for the Eagles, each getting an out in the ninth. Johnson picked up his second save of the season.

USI will return home Wednesday, April 3, and host a doubleheader with the University of Missouri-St. Louis. Game time for the doubleheader is noon.
