Hillsdale downs Gannon in Great Lakes Region quarterfinals

Hillsdale College had four players score in double-figures as it defeated fifth-seeded Gannon University, 77-59, in the first round of the NCAA Division II Great Lakes Regional Tournament at the Physical Activities Center in Evansville, Indiana. The fourth-seeded Chargers advance to the semifinals—where they will face the top seed University of Southern Indiana—while the Lady Knights of Gannon end their season with a 20-8 overall record.

The Chargers used a 19-7 run to close the first half and head into the locker room with a 34-27 halftime lead. Hillsdale used a 14-2 run to open the second half and take a commanding 48-29 lead with 15:20 to play in the game.

Hillsdale (23-7) shot 53.8 percent from the field in the second half and forced Gannon into 28 turnovers in the game.

Junior guard Stephanie Heid poured in a game-high 20 points to lead Hillsdale. Fellow teammates Mary Wiesen and Jen Newsome scored 15 and 14 points, respectively, while junior forward Amanda Vriesenga rounded out the double-figure scoring for the Chargers with 11 points.

Gannon was led by freshman forward Tiffany Jones and senior center Kristin Roseberry. Jones scored a team-high 12 points while Roseberry added nine points and a game-high 12 rebounds.

The Hillsdale-Southern Indiana match up is scheduled for Friday, March 8, at the Physical Activities Center. Game time is 6 p.m.
