Eagles blast by Lady Rangers, 8-2

Second game postponed

The University of Southern Indiana softball team hammered out eight runs off eight hits as it cruised to an 8-2 victory over the University of Wisconsin-Parkside this afternoon at the Case Complex in Kenosha, Wisconsin. The game was delayed by two hours, forcing the second game of the doubleheader to be postponed due to darkness.

Sophomore catcher Kristen Houseworth (Martinsville, Indiana) hit her first homerun of the season, the third of her career, to get the Screaming Eagles on the board in the top of the second inning. The two-run blast over the leftfield fence gave the Eagles a 2-0 lead.

Senior hurler Danielle Garnett (Griffith, Indiana) went the distance, striking out eight batters and surrendering just two runs off five hits. The win improves Garnett to 8-4 on the season.

The Eagles, which improve to 13-9 overall and 3-2 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference, enlarged their lead to 4-0 after cranking out two hits and scoring a pair of runs in the top of the fifth inning.

Junior outfielder Ginnie Roberts (Lafayette, Indiana) led the inning off with a double to right-centerfield. Roberts came around to score on a sacrifice fly by junior shortstop Jenny Duell (Lafayette, Indiana). Sophomore first baseman Monica Tepe (Granger, Indiana) knocked in USI's fourth run of the game with a single to centerfield.

After allowing a pair of UWP runs in the bottom of the fifth inning, the Eagles headed into the top of the seventh inning clinging to a 4-2 advantage. However, an error extended USI's half of the inning and allowed its fifth run of the game to cross the plate. Junior centerfielder/pitcher Rachel Bowling (Middleton, Indiana) capitalized on UWP's mistake as she belted her team-leading seventh homerun of the season, pushing across three more runners and giving the Eagles an 8-2 lead.

UWP's Jennifer Mayer fell to 6-1 on the season after giving up the eight runs, six of which were unearned. The Lady Rangers, who fall to 9-5 overall and 2-3 in the GLVC, committed three errors in the contest.

The Eagles will resume play tomorrow when they travel to Romeoville, Illinois to take on Lewis University. USI leads the season-series 1-0 after handing the Flyers a 3-1 defeat at the Division II Rebel Spring Games in Orlando, Florida. Tomorrow's action is scheduled as a doubleheader with the first pitch slated for 11 a.m.
