Stuckman leads 4th-ranked Eagles to GLVC Championship game

Sophomore forward Jessica Stuckman (Quincy, Illinois) scored a tournament-high 28 points and grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds to lead the fourth-ranked University of Southern Indiana women's basketball team to a 90-80 victory over Quincy University in the semifinals of the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament at Roberts Stadium in Evansville, Indiana.

Down by four with 5:27 to go in the half, the Eagles used a 13-5 run to close out the first half and head into the locker room with a 41-37 halftime lead. USI shot 45.5 percent from the field and saw Quincy shoot a sizzling 61.5 percent in the first stanza.

However, the Eagles held the Lady Hawks to just 1-of-7 from behind the arc and forced 13 first half turnovers as they went into halftime with the four-point advantage.

USI struggled to gain momentum as the second half got underway. After extending their lead to 43-37, the Eagles found themselves on the opposite end of a 12-6 run that knotted the game up at 49 with 15:49 to go.

Tied at 53 with 12:21 to go in the contest, USI went on a 13-3 run to give it a comfortable 10-point advantage. However, the Lady Hawks fought back once again, cutting the USI lead to 66-61 with seven minutes to play.

Up by five, the Eagles turned to Stuckman and senior forward Casey Hughes (Bicknell, Indiana). The two led USI to a 13-4 run that gave the Eagles their biggest lead of the game (79-65). The two scored all 13 points with Hughes dropping in eight of the 13.

USI fortified its defensive efforts in the second stanza, holding the Lady Hawks to just 37.5 percent from the field and forcing seven second-half turnovers. Offensively, the Eagles shot 48.6 percent from the field in the second period.

Hughes scored 12 of her 18 points in the second half, including 10 of those 12 points in the final seven minutes of the contest.

Stuckman's 10-of-10 performance from the charity stripe tied Natalie Glaser's (USI) GLVC Tournament single-game record for free throw percentage. She was 9-of-13 from the floor as she fell two points shy of tying a GLVC Tournament single-game scoring record (30).

Senior guard Jasmine Moore (Chicago, Illinois) added 15 points and a game-high six steals in the winning effort.

USI, 25-5 overall and the second seed in the tournament, advances to the GLVC Championship game where it will play the winner of sixth-ranked Northern Kentucky University, the top seed in the tournament, and Bellarmine University, the fourth seed in the tournament. Tip-off is scheduled for 4 p.m. at Roberts Stadium.
