USI hits the road for a pair of GLVC games

The University of Southern Indiana women's basketball team will hit the road for a pair of Great Lakes Valley Conference doubleheaders, visiting Southern Illinois University Edwardsville Thursday, February 7, and Lewis University Saturday, February 9.

USI will be looking for regular season sweeps of the Cougars and the Lady Flyers. The Eagles won the first round with each team at the Physical Activities Center, defeating the Lady Flyers back on November 29, 83-53, and the Cougars last month, 74-63.

USI bounced back from a loss to Bellarmine University to win its only game last week, 90-67 over the University of Missouri-St. Louis. The women's team has won 11 of its last 12 games and is a game behind first place Northern Kentucky University in the GLVC race.

The Eagles (18-4, 11-3 GLVC) continue to ride high on the strength of sophomore forward Jessica Stuckman (Quincy, Illinois). Stuckman led the Eagles in the November victory over Lewis with 20 points and 10 rebounds. She also continues to lead the Eagles and the GLVC in scoring with 21.1 points per game this season.

Senior guard Jasmine Moore (Chicago, Illinois) took the lead for the Eagles in the January victory over SIUE, scoring 20 points and dishing out four assists. Moore, who is second on the team in scoring with 13.8 ppg in 2001-02, ranks first on the squad and fifth in the conference with 4.2 assists per game.

SIUE (11-10, 9-6 GLVC) enters this week's contests on a three-game losing streak. The Cougars tested the Eagles back in January, shooting over 50 percent by hitting 23-of-44 from the field and 4-of-8 from beyond the three-point arc. Junior forward Ruth Kipping led the Cougars at the PAC with 25 points and 15 rebounds and for the season with 19.1 ppg and 9.5 rpg.

Lewis (6-14, 3-11 GLVC) was held to 18-45 from the field and 0-8 from beyond the three-point arc in the first meeting with USI in November. Freshman guard/forward Cassie Stark led the Flyers with 11 points in the first meeting, but senior center Jennifer Simon leads the team in 2001-02 with just 8.8 ppg and 4.1 rpg.

The game time is 5:30 p.m. on Thursday at SIUE and 1 p.m. on Saturday at Lewis.
