USI holds off Bellarmine charge to win on the road

The University of Southern Indiana women's basketball team held off a late charge by Bellarmine University to win on the road 96-85 in Louisville Thursday night. USI raises its record to 22-5 overall and 15-4 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference, while Bellarmine falls to 17-8 overall, 12-7 GLVC.

The Screaming Eagles built double digit leads throughout the game only to have the Knights cut the lead to five points and finally to three at 86-83 with just over a minute to play. The Eagles regained control in the final minute and used a 10-0 run to end the game with a 96-85 win. USI did all of this with sophomore forward Jessica Stuckman (Quincy, Illinois), senior center Michelle Irwin (Louisville, Kentucky), and junior center Africa Sherrod (Ft. Lauderdale, Florida) fouling out of the game during the second half.

The Eagles shot much better as team tonight against Bellarmine, hitting 54.7 percent of their shot (35-64) compared to 35.1 percent in the loss at the Physical Activities Center (27-77).

Senior guard Jasmine Moore (Chicago, Illinois) led the Eagles in scoring with 20 points and six assists. This was the fourth time this season that Moor has reach the 20-point mark in a game.

Moore was followed in double-digit scoring by senior forward Casey Hughes (Bicknell, Indiana) with 18 points junior guard/forward Sarah McIntosh (Cabery, Illinois), 16 points Stuckman, 13 points and six rebounds and Sherrod, 12 points and six rebounds. The 16-points were a season-high for McIntosh.

The Eagles will conclude the 2001-02 regular season on Saturday, February 23, at the Sportscenter in Owensboro, Kentucky, to play Kentucky Wesleyan College. Game time is 5:15 p.m.

The victory over Bellarmine locked up the number two seed in the GLVC Tournament for USI. The Eagles still have a chance at a number one seeding and the GLVC regular season championship with a win over Kentucky Wesleyan College and a loss by Northern Kentucky University to Quincy University on Saturday. The GLVC Tournament will begin on Wednesday, February 27, at Roberts Stadium in Evansville, Indiana.
