Eagles nab 20th victory with 91-64 win over Lady Pumas

There was no need for overtime in the second meeting between the 11th-ranked University of Southern Indiana women's basketball team and Saint Joseph's College as the Screaming Eagles belted the Lady Pumas 91-64 this evening at the Physical Activities Center in Evansville, Indiana.

USI, who used an extra period to defeat SJC, 76-73, in their first meeting back in January, improves to 20-5 overall and 13-4 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. SJC falls to 7-17 overall and 6-11 in the GLVC.

The Eagles held the Lady Pumas scoreless throughout the first five minutes of the game as they amassed an 8-0 lead. USI shot just 39.1 percent from the floor in the first half but had 19 more shots than that of SJC and had a decisive 30-17 lead on the boards.

Leading by five with 6:08 to go in the first period, the Eagles used a 14-2 run to take a commanding 41-24 lead with 2:44 to go in the first half. USI forced 14 first-half turnovers as it headed into the locker room with a 43-30 halftime lead.

Sophomore forward Jessica Stuckman (Quincy, Illinois) and junior guard/forward Sarah McIntosh (Cabery, Illinois) led the Eagles in the first frame with nine points apiece.

USI closed the door on SJC early in the second half as it reeled off an 11-2 run to open the period and take a convincing 54-32 lead with 16:35 to play. The Eagles shot 48.5 percent from the floor in the second period and continued its dominance of the boards, out-rebounding the Lady Pumas 27-21.

Senior guard Jasmine Moore (Chicago, Illinois) scored 13 of her game-high 19 points in the second period and finished the contest with a game-high six assists and five steals. The six assists pushed her into fifth place all-time at USI in career assists (250).

For the game, USI shot 43.0 percent and out-rebounded SJC 57-38. USI's defense was stiff throughout the game as it forced 23 turnovers and held the Lady Pumas to 28.6 percent shooting from the floor.

Stuckman followed Moore with 16 points and grabbed a game-high 14 rebounds, eight of which came in the first period. Senior center Michelle Irwin (Louisville, Kentucky) added 13 points and seven rebounds while junior forward/center Africa Sherrod (Ft. Lauderdale, Florida) matched the 13 points while picking up four rebounds.

Senior forward Casey Hughes (Bicknell, Indiana) tapped in with 10 points and seven rebounds.

The Eagles will wrap up their 2001-02 regular season schedule Saturday, February 16, as they host the University of Indianapolis. Saturday's contest is Senior Night for the Eagles and is scheduled for 5:15 p.m. at the Physical Activities Center.
