The University of Southern Indiana women's basketball team lost for the third straight time Sunday afternoon, falling to Ferris State University, 66-56, in the GLVC/GLIAC Challenge at the Physical Activities Center in Evansville, Indiana. The Screaming Eagles fall to 4-7 while the Bulldogs improve to 7-3.
After scoring the game's first bucket, the Eagles found themselves on the opposite end of a 15-0 run that put them behind 15-2 seven minutes into the game. USI battled back, however, and tied the game at 23 with 4:18 to go in the first stanza.
However, a dismal shooting performance and 13 turnovers in the first stanza caught up with USI as it went into the locker room trailing 31-27. The Eagles were held to just eight field goals in the first half, none of which came from behind the arc, and a 24.2 percent shooting percentage in the first half.
The Eagles came out of the gates in the second frame by scoring the first four points and tying the contest at 31. However, a 10-0 run put Ferris State up, 41-31, with just under 15 minutes to play in the game.
USI tried to claw its way back into the game, but a 7-0 run put the Bulldogs up by 18 and into cruise control the rest of the way.
Leading the way for the Eagles was junior guard/forward
Shannon Wells (Merrillville, Indiana) and junior forward
Shajuan Lindsey (Midlothian, Illinois). Wells scored a team-high 14 points while hauling in 9 rebounds. Lindsey racked up 13 points and pulled in 7 rebounds.
Senior forward/center
Africa Sherrod (Ft. Lauderdale, Florida) grabbed a game-high 13 rebounds but was limited to 5 points on 2-of-13 shooting. It was the first time in 10 contests that Sherrod has not recorded a double-double.
Ferris State was led by junior guard Lucy DeMartin's 14 points and sophomore forward Molly Potvin's nine rebounds.
The Eagles will try to rebound as it returns to conference play. USI will travel to Romeoville, Illinois, this Thursday, January 2, to take on Lewis University. It will wrap up the weekend's action Saturday, January 4, as it travels to Edwardsville, Illinois, to take on Southern Illinois University Edwardsville. Thursday's contest is slated for a 5:15 p.m. start while Saturday's game is set to tip-off at 1 p.m.
