USI has hot second half to defeat Lock Haven

The University of Southern Indiana men's basketball team used a red-hot second half from the field to defeat Lock Haven University, 86-63, at the Physical Activities Center Sunday afternoon. USI raises its record to 7-3 overall, while Lock Haven goes to 1-6 this year.

The Screaming Eagles shot 59.4 percent from the field (19-32) in the second half and outscored Lock Haven 48-36 for the victory. The Eagles had four players score in double figures, led by sophomore guard Cris Brunson (Evansville, Indiana) with 16 points.

Brunson, who sank a game-high four three-point field goals, was followed by junior forward Clarence Chiller (Chicago, Illinois) with 15 points. Senior guard/forward Alan Goff (Terre Haute, Indiana) and junior forward/center Reque Newsome (St. Petersburg, Florida) recorded season-bests with 13 points and 12 points, respectively.

The Eagles were led on the boards by senior forward Diond're Givens (Mt. Vernon, Indiana) with 10 rebounds. Givens saw his streak of eight consecutive double figure scoring games come to an end with an eight-point performance.

With the victory, the Eagles have won 19 straight at the PAC, third best in the NCAA Division II.

USI resumes its Great Lakes Valley Conference schedule Thursday, January 2, at Lewis University. Game time is 7:30 p.m. USI split last season's series with Lewis, who is picked to finish second in the league this year. The next home game for USI will be Thursday, January 9, when the Eagles host the University of Missouri-St. Louis.
