USI men’s soccer teams advances to GLVC Final Four

Screaming Eagles advance past the first round for the first time since 1995

At the end of the soccer match, the players and the fans were equally exhausted and the field was nothing but mud. The outcome, however, made University of Southern Indiana fans jump for joy as the Screaming Eagles defeated Quincy University in double overtime, 3-2, at Strassweg Field to advance the second round of the Great Lakes Valley Tournament Wednesday afternoon.

USI, which raised its record to 12-7-0 overall, will play top-seeded Lewis University Saturday morning, November 9, in Romeoville, Illinois, for the right to advance to the GLVC Championship game Sunday, November 10. Game time on Saturday is 11 a.m.

This is the first time USI will advance to the second round of the GLVC Tournament since 1995. The Eagles also have not been in the GLVC Finals since 1991 when the squad won its fourth straight GLVC crown.

To get to the 100:16 mark of the second overtime, the Eagles had to come from behind twice. Quincy, which finishes the year with a 10-6-2 record, started the scoring at the 9:00 mark off the foot of forward Senad Hot. The Hawks led 1-0 until USI's senior forward/midfielder Duncan Bray (Scotland) scored the first equalizer and his ninth of the year at the 24:15 mark of the first half.

Bray's goal came off a pass by junior midfielder Shawn Sloan (St. Peters, Missouri), who picked the first of his two assists on the play.

The Hawks retook the lead with 27 second left in the first half, 2-1, on an unassisted goal by midfielder Kevin Vaninger.

The Eagles came back for the second time in the match on the first of two tallies by senior forward Greg Henry (France) with 6:13 to play in regulation. Henry's goal was his 10th of the season and sent the match into overtime, 2-2. The goal came off a cross by Sloan, who picked up his second assist of the match.

After the first overtime period was scoreless, Henry wasted no time in the second overtime period with his second of the game and his 11th of the season. Henry put away the rebound of a shot by senior forward John Havill (Washington, Indiana) just 16 seconds into the second overtime frame.

The victory was the 12th of the season most since 1991 for USI.
