Eagles advance to semifinals of GLVC Tournament

ROMEOVILLE, Ill.—Senior outside hitter Shannon Wells (Merrillville, Indiana) recorded a match-high 21 kills and 17 digs to lead the University of Southern Indiana volleyball team to a 30-26, 30-26, 30-21 victory over Quincy University Thursday afternoon in the first round of the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament in Romeoville, Illinois. The Screaming Eagles improve to 23-7 with the victory while the Lady Hawks finish their season with a 13-14 mark.

Wells, who hit .366 in the match, got help from fellow classmate Kristina Kavanaugh (Montgomery, Indiana) and sophomore middle blocker Natalie Atzinger (Louisville, Kentucky). Kavanaugh finished the match with 11 kills and 14 digs while Atzinger recorded seven kills and a .357 attacking percentage.

The Eagles hit .310 and recorded 21 kills in the first game. USI was forced to overcome a blistering attacking percentage (.333) by the Lady Hawks in the first game as it claimed a 1-0 lead in the match.

Despite hitting just .167 in the second game and .159 in the third game, the Eagles came away with victories in games two and three to close the match, 3-0. USI held Quincy to a negative hitting percentage in the second game and a .083 hitting percentage in the third game as it topped the Lady Hawks for the third time this season.

Junior setter Kim Boehmer (Cincinnati, Ohio) set up USI's attack. Boehmer recorded a match-high 40 assists to go along with 11 digs. She also set USI's single-season assists record with her performance. Boehmer now has 1,273 assists on the season and 3,780 assists in her three-year career at USI.

The Eagles will play the sixth-seeded University of Indianapolis in the semifinals of the GLVC Tournament tomorrow evening in Romeoville, Illinois. The Greyhounds advanced to the semifinal round by defeating the third seed, Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, in five games. Match-time is slated for a 5 p.m. start. Saturday's championship round is scheduled for a 2 p.m. start.
