The University of Southern Indiana women's soccer team lost a heartbreaker in double overtime to Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, 2-1, in Edwardsville, Illinois, Sunday afternoon. USI falls to 3-8-0 overall, 1-4 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference, while SIUE rises to 7-1-1 overall, 2-1-1 GLVC.
After a scoreless first half, the Cougars broke out on top 1-0 with a goal seven seconds into the second half (45:07). The Screaming Eagles tied the score, 1-1, on an unassisted goal by junior midfielder
Megan Fitzler (Maryland Heights, Missouri) at 73:47. The tally was the third goal of the season by Fitzler.
The match ended when SIUE scored 3:14 into the second sudden victory period the match. SIUE sophomore midfielder Sara Decker headed in a pass from junior midfielder/forward Colleen Creamer for the game-winner at 108:14.
The Eagles will resume GLVC action Friday, October 5, on the road in Quincy, Illinois, to take on the Quincy University Hawks in a 5 p.m. match. The next action at home will be Sunday, October 7, when the University of Missouri St. Louis visits Strassweg Field for a noon match.
