Junior outside hitter Shannon Wells (Merrillville, Indiana) recorded a career-high 32 kills while posting 18 defensive digs to lead the University of Southern Indiana volleyball team to a 3-1 victory over Quincy University in its Great Lakes Valley Conference opener this evening at the Physical Activities Center.

The Eagles exchanged points and leads in the first game, but fell 33-35 despite holding the Lady Hawks to a .105 attacking percentage.

Trailing by a game, the Eagles turned up the intensity in game two as they recorded a .341 hitting percentage. USI won the second stanza 30-20 and evened the match at a game-a-piece.

After pulling away in game three to win 30-26, the Eagles headed into game four with a 2-1 lead and a chance to wrap up the match. The Eagles did not waste time as they jumped out to a 13-3 lead. USI continued to pour on the pressure, tallying a .297 attacking percentage in game four, as it ended the match with a 30-20 game-four victory.

In addition to her career night in kills, Wells tallied a game-high five assists and moved into second place all-time at USI with 135 career assists.

Sophomore setter Kim Boehmer (Cincinnati, Ohio) also moved up in the record books after tallying a match-high 56 assists. The reigning GLVC Freshman of the Year moved into fourth place in career assists (1,597) at USI.

Freshman middle blocker Leeanne Gross (Decatur, Indiana) added 14 kills and 12 digs while junior outside hitter Kristina Kavanaugh (Montgomery, Indiana) contributed 13 kills and 11 digs.

Evansville native Leah Mercer also got into the action. The squad's lone senior dished in seven kills and 15 digs while posting a team-high two solo blocks.

The Eagles, who raise their record to 7-5 overall and 1-0 in the GLVC, will face the University of Missouri-St. Louis tomorrow afternoon at the PAC. The match is scheduled for 2 p.m.
